Workflow

What is a workflow?

The term «workflow» refers to a defined sequence of tasks and decisions that leads to a specific outcome. A workflow specifies who does what, when, and what steps follow next.

A simple example is a vacation request: An employee submits their request, the supervisor reviews it, and after approval, the vacation days are recorded. Each step follows a set sequence. It is precisely this sequence that constitutes a workflow.

Workflows can be carried out manually, but they deliver the greatest benefit when they are digitized and automated. Clear responsibilities, deadlines, and traceable processes ensure greater efficiency, transparency, and traceability.

Unlike a business process, a workflow describes the concrete implementation of a procedure. While a business process focuses on the goal and the roles involved, the workflow defines the individual steps, decisions, and rules. Digital workflows are executed by a workflow engine that manages tasks, monitors deadlines, and automatically drives the process forward.
